The study of language arts

Hello All,

My name is Erlisa Caku and I am a teacher candidate! I have created this blog as a part of my language arts assignments. This blog will deal with a wide variety of approaches to the study and teaching language arts. The study of language arts is very broad because as we know language can be interpreted in a lot of ways such as language through media (TV, radio, internet, video etc), books, newspapers or art. In today's interconnected world, information is often transmitted in high volume and often times we do not take the time to analyze, critically examine or develop an opinion on all this information. As such, the study and the teaching of language arts becomes more meaningful when one thinks of the critical thinking skills that you hone from this study. That is, one is able to decipher the meaning of texts or media and come to their own conclusion. It is important to note that the study of language arts has to be taught in a way that engages today's high-tech students. One of the strands in language arts is media literacy, so I will start off my first blog post discussing how we can can create a lesson or activity that focuses on a particular form of media. Below I have embedded a video that will lead us into my next post. It is a Ted Talk that discusses the importance of creating critical thinkers through media literacy.
